Ahasuerus and Vashti
Esther 1 recounts the events that led to Queen Vashti’s removal, setting the stage for God’s purpose in the history of His people. Read the full passage here.
Text Structure
Est 1:1-9
The great celebration. Ahasuerus hosts lavish banquets to display his wealth and power, revealing the atmosphere of luxury and influence within the Persian court.
Est 1:10-12
Vashti’s refusal. The queen refuses the king’s command to appear before his guests, triggering a crisis within the royal palace.
Est 1:13-18
The consultation of the advisers. The wise men interpret Vashti’s actions as a threat to male authority and recommend strict measures.
Est 1:19-22
The change in the palace. The decree is issued, Vashti loses her position, and the story moves toward Esther’s rise.

Reflection
Esther 1 shows that seemingly ordinary events can prepare the way for greater purposes that we may not yet be able to see.
