Nehemiah 4 recounts the opposition faced during the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls and the people’s perseverance in the face of threats. Read the full passage here.
Text Structure
Neh 4:1-3
The ridicule from the adversaries. Sanballat and Tobiah mock the rebuilding efforts, attempting to weaken the people’s motivation through criticism and contempt.
Neh 4:4-6
The response in prayer. Nehemiah brings the opposition before God, and the people continue working, demonstrating trust and perseverance in the midst of hostility.
Neh 4:7-9
The growing threat. The enemies plan attacks to stop the work, but the people respond with vigilance and continual prayer.
Neh 4:10-14
The fight against discouragement. Weariness and fear spread among the people, and Nehemiah strengthens them by reminding them of God’s care and power.
Neh 4:15-18
The balance between work and protection. The builders continue their work while remaining prepared to defend the city.
Neh 4:19-23
The unity in the mission. The people remain mobilized and alert, demonstrating collective commitment until the task is completed.

Reflection
Nehemiah 4 shows that every meaningful work faces opposition. Criticism, threats, and discouragement arise, but they do not have to stop what God has placed in our hands.
The people’s attitude reveals that faith does not eliminate responsibility. They prayed, remained watchful, and continued working with perseverance.
