Ezra 1 describes the decree of Cyrus allowing the Jews to return to Jerusalem and the beginning of the temple’s reconstruction, fulfilling God’s promise. Read the full passage here.


Text Structure

Ez 1:1-2

The fulfillment of prophecy. God moves the heart of Cyrus to issue a decree, showing that history is under His sovereign control.

Ez 1:3-4

The call to return. The people are invited to go back to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple, restoring central worship.

Ez 1:5-6

The response of the people. Families rise up and willingly return, driven by a sense of purpose and direction.

Ez 1:7-11

The restoration of the temple articles. Items from the temple are returned, symbolizing a new beginning and continuity in worship.

Reflection

Ezra 1 shows that God never loses control of history. Even after the exile, He opens paths for restoration.

The decree of Cyrus reveals that God can use even foreign rulers to accomplish His purposes.
