Text Structure
1 Kgs 3:1-4
The initial context. Solomon establishes alliances and demonstrates devotion, offering sacrifices during a period of spiritual transition, when worship was not yet centralized in the temple.
1 Kgs 3:5-9
Solomon’s request. In a dream, God gives him the opportunity to ask for anything, and Solomon chooses wisdom to govern, recognizing his limitations in light of the responsibility.
1 Kgs 3:10-14
God’s response. God is pleased with the request and grants wisdom, along with riches and honor, making the continuation of these blessings dependent on obedience.
1 Kgs 3:15
The confirmation of the experience. Solomon awakens, recognizes the divine action, and turns to worship, showing gratitude and reverence for what he has received.
1 Kgs 3:16-28
Wisdom in practice. The judgment between the two women reveals discernment and justice, publicly confirming the wisdom granted by God.

Reflection
1 Kings 3 shows that recognizing limitations is the beginning of true wisdom. Solomon did not ask for power, but for discernment to fulfill his responsibility.
