Text Structure

1Sm 3:1-3

The time of silence. The word of the Lord was rare, and visions were not frequent, indicating a period of spiritual distance.

1Sm 3:4-9

The repeated call. God calls Samuel, who initially does not recognize the voice, until Eli instructs him on how to respond.

1Sm 3:10

Samuel’s response. Samuel positions himself and says, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening,” showing willingness to hear.

1Sm 3:11-14

The message received. God reveals to Samuel the judgment on Eli’s house, entrusting him with a difficult responsibility.

1Sm 3:15-18

The faithfulness in communicating. Even with fear, Samuel delivers the message to Eli, demonstrating integrity and courage.

1Sm 3:19-21

The public recognition. Samuel grows, and God confirms his word, and he is recognized as a prophet in Israel.

Reflection

1 Samuel 3 shows that recognizing God’s voice is a process. Samuel did not understand it immediately, but learned through experience.

The response “speak, Lord” reveals a willing heart. Listening to God requires attention, humility, and readiness to obey.

This passage teaches that God entrusts responsibilities to those who are available. The calling begins with a willingness to listen.
