Text Structure
Rt 1:1-5
The loss and emptiness. Naomi faces famine, relocation, and the death of her husband and sons, leaving her in a situation of deep pain and uncertainty.
Rt 1:6-10
The return to Bethlehem. Upon hearing that God had visited His people, Naomi decides to return, and her daughters-in-law begin the journey with her, showing bond and loyalty.
Rt 1:11-14
The decision of the daughters-in-law. Naomi insists they return; Orpah goes back, but Ruth chooses to stay, even without guarantees.
Rt 1:15-18
Ruth’s declaration. Ruth affirms her decision to follow Naomi and adopt her people and her God, demonstrating deep commitment.
Rt 1:19-22
The arrival in Bethlehem. Naomi returns marked by pain, acknowledging her bitterness, while Ruth begins a new chapter by her side.
Reflection
Ruth 1 shows that decisions made in difficult moments can define the entire future. Ruth chooses to stay when it would have been easier to return.
Ruth’s faithfulness reveals that true commitment does not depend on favorable circumstances, but on inner conviction. Naomi’s pain shows that we do not always understand what God is doing. Even so, the story continues to be written.
This passage teaches that new beginnings can arise from loss. What seems like an end may be the beginning of something greater.
