The calling of Gideon
Judges 6 recounts the Midianite oppression and the calling of Gideon, showing how God raises a deliverer in the midst of fear and insecurity. Read the full text here.
Text Structure
Jdg 6:1-6
The oppression of Midian. Israel suffers constant attacks, losing crops and living in fear, as a result of their departure from God.
Jdg 6:7-10
The prophetic message. God sends a prophet to remind the people that the oppression was a consequence of disobedience.
Jdg 6:11-16
The calling of Gideon. God meets Gideon and calls him to deliver Israel, even in the face of his insecurity.
Jdg 6:17-24
The confirmation of the call. Gideon asks for a sign, and God responds, strengthening his faith and confidence in the mission.
Jdg 6:25-32
The first action. Gideon destroys the altar of Baal, facing opposition, but beginning the process of spiritual restoration.
Jdg 6:33-35
The mobilization for battle. Gideon gathers the people while the Spirit of God empowers him to lead.
Jdg 6:36-40
The search for confirmation. Gideon asks for additional signs with the fleece, showing his internal struggle between faith and doubt.

Reflection
Judges 6 shows that God calls ordinary people in difficult times. Gideon did not see himself as a leader, but God saw potential and purpose.
Gideon’s insecurity reveals that faith does not mean the absence of doubt. Even while questioning, he continues to respond to the call.
This passage teaches that God works through the process. Before the great victory, there are stages of internal confrontation and spiritual growth.
