Joshua, the new leader
Joshua 1 marks the beginning of Joshua’s leadership after the death of Moses, bringing encouragement, direction, and reaffirmation of God’s promises. Read the full text here.
Text Structure
Josh 1:1-2
The transition of leadership. After Moses’ death, God calls Joshua to take leadership, marking the beginning of a new phase.
Josh 1:3-5
The promise reaffirmed. God assures that He will give the land to the people, confirming His faithfulness and constant presence with Joshua.
Josh 1:6-9
The encouragement. Joshua is called to be strong and courageous, remaining firm in the law and trusting in God’s presence at all times.
Josh 1:10-11
The preparation of the people. Joshua instructs the people to prepare to cross the Jordan, highlighting organization and readiness.
Josh 1:12-15
The commitment of the tribes. The tribes east of the Jordan reaffirm their support, showing unity in fulfilling the mission.
Josh 1:16-18
The response of the people. The people declare loyalty to Joshua and reinforce the call to courage, recognizing the continuity of leadership.

Reflection
Joshua 1 shows that new beginnings can bring uncertainty, but God provides clear direction. A change in leadership does not mean a change in the promise.
The call to courage reveals that moving forward requires decision, even in the face of the unknown. God’s presence is the foundation of confidence.
This passage teaches that continuity depends on obedience. Joshua’s success was not in his own ability, but in following God’s direction.
