Text Structure
Num 22:1-6
Balak’s fear. The king of Moab fears Israel and seeks Balaam to curse the people, revealing insecurity in the face of Israel’s advance.
Num 22:7-14
The first request. Messengers approach Balaam, but God prevents him from going, making it clear that Israel was a blessed people.
Num 22:15-21
Balak’s persistence. The king sends new messengers with greater promises, and Balaam shows hesitation, revealing inner conflict.
Num 22:22-27
The divine intervention. The angel of the Lord stands in the way, and the donkey sees the danger, turning aside while Balaam does not perceive it.
Num 22:28-30
The donkey speaks. God opens the animal’s mouth, and it questions Balaam, revealing the prophet’s spiritual blindness.
Num 22:31-35
The revelation of the angel. Balaam finally sees the angel and acknowledges his error, being warned to speak only what God allows.
Num 22:36-41
The meeting with Balak. Balaam arrives before the king, but makes it clear that his words would be limited by God’s will.

Reflection
Numbers 22 shows that having spiritual intentions does not always mean being aligned with God. Balaam knew God, but his heart was divided.
Spiritual blindness can prevent someone from seeing what is clearly in front of them. While Balaam did not see, the donkey recognized the danger.
This passage teaches that God can use even unexpected means to correct the path. When necessary, He interrupts the journey to realign direction.
