Exodus 17
Water from the rock and Battle
Exodus 17 shows God providing water in the wilderness and granting victory in battle, revealing His provision and care in different areas of the journey. Read the full text here.
Text Structure
Ex 17:1-4
The lack of water. The people face scarcity and respond with intense complaints, even questioning God’s presence and Moses’ leadership.
Ex 17:5-7
The water from the rock. God instructs Moses to strike the rock, and water flows from it, providing for the people and demonstrating that He can supply even the impossible.
Ex 17:8-10
The battle against Amalek. Israel faces an unexpected enemy, and Joshua leads the people in battle while Moses takes a strategic position.
Ex 17:11-13
The dependence in battle. As long as Moses holds up his hands, Israel prevails; when he grows tired, the enemy advances, revealing spiritual dependence.
Ex 17:14-16
The remembrance of victory. God commands that the event be recorded, and an altar is built, acknowledging that the victory came from the Lord.

Reflection
Exodus 17 shows that difficulties can arise even when we are on the right path. The presence of challenges does not mean the absence of God, but an opportunity for growth.
The water from the rock reveals that God provides for impossible needs, while the battle shows that we also face conflicts that require action and dependence.
This passage teaches that victory and provision go hand in hand. God acts, but He also involves us in the process, teaching us to trust Him in the midst of the struggle.
