Exodus 2 presents the birth of Moses and how God preserves him in the midst of oppression, preparing the beginning of a great deliverance. Read the full text here.
Text Structure
Ex 2:1-4
The birth of Moses. In the midst of a death decree, a boy is born and hidden by his mother, who acts with faith and courage to protect him.
Ex 2:5-10
Unexpected deliverance. Moses is found by Pharaoh’s daughter and spared, being raised in the palace while his own mother nurses him.
Ex 2:11-14
An attempt at justice. As an adult, Moses sees the oppression and kills an Egyptian, but his act is discovered, revealing that it was not yet the right time.
Ex 2:15-17
Flight to Midian. Moses flees to the desert and helps the daughters of a priest, showing a character willing to stand for what is right.
Ex 2:18-22
A new phase. Moses settles in Midian, starts a family, and begins a simple life, far from Egypt and his former position.
Ex 2:23-25
The people’s cry. Israel suffers under oppression and cries out to God, who hears, remembers His covenant, and begins to act on behalf of His people.

Reflection
Exodus 2 shows that God preserves what is part of His purpose. Even in the midst of threat, Moses is protected and prepared from the beginning.
Not every human initiative aligns with God’s timing. Moses’ attempt reveals intention, but also shows that the process was not yet complete.
As presented in Patriarchs and Prophets, chapter 22, God works both in circumstances and within the heart. Before the public calling, there is a season of silent preparation.
