Genesis 50
The death of Jacob and Joseph
Genesis 50 concludes the story of Joseph, highlighting farewells, forgiveness, and the certainty that God fulfills His purposes. Read the full text here.
Text Structure
Gn 50:1-6
Mourning for Jacob. Joseph weeps over his father’s death and arranges his burial according to his request, demonstrating honor and deep respect.
Gn 50:7-14
Burial in Canaan. A large procession accompanies the journey to Canaan, marking a solemn and meaningful moment for the entire family.
Gn 50:15-18
The brothers’ fear. After Jacob’s death, the brothers fear revenge and seek to secure Joseph’s forgiveness once again.
Gn 50:19-21
Forgiveness reaffirmed. Joseph responds with grace, reminding them that God turned evil into good and reaffirming his commitment to care for them.
Gn 50:22-23
The continuation of life. Joseph lives in Egypt with his family, witnessing the growth of future generations and the continuation of the promise.
Gn 50:24-26
Future hope. Before his death, Joseph declares that God will visit His people and asks that his bones be taken back to the promised land.

Reflection
Genesis 50 shows that a life guided by God ends with peace and purpose. Even after everything he experienced, Joseph remains steadfast in his faith.
Forgiveness was not just a moment, but a continuous choice. Joseph reaffirms grace where there could have been justice, living out what God had already worked in his heart.
