Genesis 47
Managing the crisis
Genesis 47 shows the arrival of Joseph’s family in Egypt and his role in managing the famine, revealing wisdom and provision in the midst of crisis. Read the full text here.
Text Structure
Gen 47:1-6
The presentation to Pharaoh. Joseph presents his brothers, and Pharaoh allows them to settle in the best land, recognizing their ability and placing his trust in them.
Gen 47:7-10
The meeting with Jacob. Jacob is brought before Pharaoh, blesses the king, and shares his life experience marked by journeys and hardships.
Gen 47:11-12
The provision for the family. Joseph settles his family in the land of Goshen and ensures their ongoing support, caring for them responsibly.
Gen 47:13-19
The management of the crisis. As the famine intensifies, Joseph manages resources wisely, providing food in exchange for goods and later even for the people’s land.
Gen 47:20-22
The centralization of land. The land becomes Pharaoh’s, while the people remain productive, with the exception of the priests.
Gen 47:23-26
The new system. Joseph establishes a system in which the people work and give a portion of their produce, ensuring survival and stability.
Gen 47:27-31
The prosperity in Goshen. Israel grows and prospers in Egypt. Near death, Jacob makes Joseph promise that he will be buried in the land of his fathers.

Reflection
Genesis 47 shows that God uses prepared people to act in times of crisis. Joseph’s wisdom preserves lives and brings order to a nation.
Faithfulness in the process leads to responsibility. Joseph not only endured the trials but was equipped to lead with balance and vision.
This passage teaches that provision and purpose go hand in hand. God not only sustains, but also positions His servants to impact others.
