Text Structure

Gen 44:1-5

Joseph’s plan. He orders that the money be returned and his cup be hidden in Benjamin’s bag, creating a test situation.

Gen 44:6-13

The accusation. The brothers are overtaken and accused of theft. When the cup is found with Benjamin, they are devastated and tear their clothes.

Gen 44:14-17

The return to Joseph. They go back to Joseph and bow before him, recognizing that they have no way to defend themselves.

Gen 44:18-29

Judah’s intercession. He speaks with humility and recounts the entire story, showing concern for the impact on his father.

Gen 44:30-34

The sacrifice. Judah offers to stay in Benjamin’s place, revealing a deep transformation in his character.

Reflection

Genesis 44 shows that God allows tests to reveal real transformation. The same family that once sold a brother is now willing to sacrifice for one.

Judah’s attitude demonstrates genuine change. He does not run from responsibility, but steps in for another, revealing a restored heart.

This passage teaches that true repentance produces action. God is not looking for words alone, but for evidence of a transformed heart.
