Text Structure

Gen 43:1-5

The need returns. The famine remains severe, and the family needs more food. Judah takes responsibility and insists that Benjamin must go.

Gen 43:6-10

The difficult decision. Jacob hesitates, but faced with necessity, he allows Benjamin to go, entrusting his life to the care of his brothers.

Gen 43:11-14

The preparation for the journey. Jacob sends gifts and double the money, placing the situation in God’s hands with both fear and hope.

Gen 43:15-18

The fear in Egypt. When they arrive and are taken to Joseph’s house, the brothers become afraid, thinking they will be punished because of the returned money.

Gen 43:19-23

The explanation. They recount what happened to the steward, who reassures them and says that God was behind it all.

Gen 43:24-30

The emotional reunion. Joseph sees Benjamin and is deeply moved, needing to step away to compose himself.

Gen 43:31-34

The banquet. Joseph welcomes his brothers to the table, honors Benjamin in a special way, and carefully observes everyone’s reaction.

Genesis 43 reveals that God leads processes with purpose. Every detail of the reunion is carefully guided to work on the hearts of those involved.
