Genesis 39
Joseph in Potiphar’s house
Genesis 39 describes Joseph’s life in Egypt, showing his faithfulness to God even in the face of temptation and injustice. Read the full text here.
Text Structure
Gen 39:1-6
Prosperity in Potiphar’s house. Even as a slave, Joseph stands out because God is with him, gaining trust and taking responsibility over the entire household.
Gen 39:7-10
The temptation. Potiphar’s wife repeatedly pressures Joseph to sin, but he resists, recognizing that it would be a sin against God and a betrayal of trust.
Gen 39:11-12
A firm decision. In a decisive moment, Joseph runs from the situation, choosing to lose his position and reputation rather than compromise his principles and his faithfulness to God.
Gen 39:13-18
The false accusation. After being rejected, Potiphar’s wife lies and twists the facts, falsely accusing Joseph and trying to justify her own actions.
Gen 39:19-20
The imprisonment. Potiphar, filled with anger after hearing the accusation, has Joseph thrown into prison, where he suffers the consequences of something he did not do.
Gen 39:21-23
God’s presence. Even in prison, God remains with Joseph, granting him favor in the eyes of the warden and placing him once again in a position of responsibility.

Reflection
Genesis 39 shows that faithfulness to God does not depend on circumstances. Joseph remains upright both in prosperity and in adversity.
His decision to flee temptation shows that victory is not always about confronting, but often about walking away. Integrity is chosen before the critical moment.
This passage teaches that doing what is right does not always bring immediate positive results, but God remains present. Faithfulness may lead to trials, but never to the absence of God.
