Text Structure
Gen 13:1-4
The return and worship. Abram returns to the place where he had built an altar and calls on the name of God, restoring his communion.
Gen 13:5-7
The conflict between herdsmen. The increase in possessions creates tension between the servants of Abram and Lot, leading to the need for separation.
Gen 13:8-9
The proposal of peace. Abram takes the initiative to avoid conflict, allowing Lot to choose first the region where he wishes to dwell.
Gen 13:10-13
The choice of Lot. Lot chooses the region that appears more advantageous, without considering the spiritual aspects of the environment.
Gen 13:14-17
The renewed promise. After the separation, God reaffirms His promise to Abram, showing that His blessing does not depend on external circumstances.
Gen 13:18
The life with God. Abram settles and builds an altar, once again demonstrating his dependence and relationship with God.

Reflection
Genesis 13 shows how decisions reveal what we truly value.
As presented in Patriarchs and Prophets, chapter 12, Abram demonstrated a spirit of humility and trust in God, while Lot made a decision based only on appearance and immediate advantage. This reveals the difference between living by faith and living by sight. Abram’s attitude in seeking peace shows that giving up is not always a loss. In many cases, it is precisely in that moment that God reaffirms His promises and directs the path.
This passage teaches us that choices based only on what seems best can bring consequences, while trusting in God leads to a safer path aligned with His purpose.
